Nissan’s future design language previewed in Vmotion 2.0 concept

Nissan is providing a preview of its future direction in sedan design direction and intelligent-mobility technology with the world debut of the Vmotion 2.0 concept at the 2017 North American International Auto Show this week.

“Technology is evolving. So is design. At Nissan, we see design as the ultimate expression of how customers see themselves, but also an expression of the vision and values of our brand,” said Shiro Nakamura, Senior Vice-President & Chief Creative Officer at Nissan. “Vmotion 2.0 previews what the future designs from Nissan will be. And it is an insightful proposition of what the future sedan could be in the coming years.”

The name of the concept car is taken from that used for the grille design on most of Nissan’s models today. The design was first seen on the Sport Sedan Concept in 2014 and then started appearing on all the new Nissan models that were introduced.


With the Vmotion 2.0 concept car at Detroit, the presentation shows emotional design, space, comfort and technology which will make mobility experience seamless for busy professionals. The concept offers hints at the future of Nissan Intelligent Mobility, the company’s roadmap to achieve zero emissions and zero fatalities.

Measuring 4860 mm in length (25 mm shorter than a Teana), the concept car’s dramatic silhouette is characterized by a ‘floating roof’, with a line flowing seamlessly from the steeply raked A-pillars to the boot lip. An extended wheelbase shows off the car’s generous cabin, while the distinctive body surface is defined by Nissan’s ‘Emotional Geometry’ design language.


The rear of the vehicle exudes class and strength. The signature Boomerang-style taillights (which were also introduced together with the V-Motion grille 3 years ago) emphasize the width of the vehicle. Similar to the grille, the rear diffuser glows when the car operates in ProPILOT mode.

The Nissan Vmotion 2.0 is a new concept vehicle that signals the company’s future sedan design direction and Intelligent Mobility technology. It combines a high sense of style, emotional design, roominess, comfort and technology to make the mobility experience seamless for busy professionals constantly on the go. The vehicle was revealed during a press conference at the 2017 North American International Auto Show.

The dynamic high-tension body is crafted in a warm silver paint with copper undertones. With a layered effect for the paint finish, a glimpse of the body at different angles reveals a subtle but different hue.

“Copper is an emerging colour trend in many industries, including fashion, product design and interior design. We wanted to introduce shade and hints of copper while mixing it with other metals such as satin silver and chrome,” said Nakamura.

The front and rear doors swing outward, creating a large pillar-less open space that invites stepping into a spacious cabin. The dashboard continues the Gliding Wing Design theme, which integrates the instrument panel and infotainment system for both the driver and passenger. The single continuous horizontal display integrates the graphic user interface (GUI) of ProPILOT. For rear-seat passengers, the centre console has a smaller screen, which can serve as an extension of the main display.


The comfortable seats are supportive, upholstered in supple leather with a unique threadless quilting on the inserts that give the look of an exquisite handbag. The steering wheel is designed to allow the driver and passenger to clearly see all the display infotainment without any interruption, enhancing a seamless GUI experience.

Thanks to its unique design, the cabin provides the driver and passenger comfort when the car is in ProPILOT mode. The centre console’s simple layout includes a multi-functional touchpad to operate the infotainment system. The surface materials throughout the interior convey luxury and sophistication, including natural Zebra Wood applied on the floor and on the inner doors.

Bose UltraNearfield Speakers including new sound management technology which increases situational awareness for drivers and enhances overall safety on the road. It can control the direction and distance of sound to generate a 360-degree sound field around a driver. This will deliver different sounds clearly and simultaneously.

The Vmotion 2.0 concept has Nissan Intelligent Driving, one of three core elements of Nissan Intelligent Mobility, also including intelligent power and intelligent integration. Nissan Intelligent Driving provides a safe and comfortable driving experience through technology such as ProPILOT, which allows the vehicle to drive in autonomous mode not just on the highway and in heavy traffic conditions, but also on urban roads with intersections.

As this concept car focusses on design, nothing is said about how it is powered, but it could well be designed for a hybrid or full electric powertrain since electrification is Nissan’s direction. Or the company could do what Hyundai Motor did with its IONIQ and offer a choice of powertrains that include internal combustion engines.
